The evocative power of "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill" lies not only in its compelling narrative but also in how its essence is conveyed before the curtain even rises. I had the distinct pleasure of stepping behind the lens not to capture the live performance, but to create the creative and marketing assets for the New Canon Theatre that would ignite public interest and bring Billie Holiday's poignant story to life for potential audiences at the Sunset Center in Carmel. This was about crafting a visual narrative that resonated with the soul of the play, drawing viewers into its world.
My Fujifilm GFX 100s was an indispensable tool in this endeavor. Its exceptional resolution and color fidelity allowed me to capture the nuanced expressions and the intricate details of the set and costumes with breathtaking clarity. We weren't documenting a live, unfolding scene, but meticulously constructing moments designed to convey the play's emotional depth and atmosphere. Every shot was carefully composed to suggest the smoky intimacy of Emerson's Bar and Grill, the raw emotion of Billie Holiday, and the period authenticity. The GFX 100s excelled in rendering the specific lighting setups we used to evoke that late-night club feel, ensuring that the promotional images had the dramatic impact necessary to draw in theatre-goers. For instance, the captivating shot of actor/singer Malinda Derouen as Billie Holiday, elegantly poised with a cigarette, a wisp of smoke curling around her, with Grammy Award-winning John Wineglass as Jimmy Powers subtly in the background, perfectly encapsulates the moody ambiance we aimed for. Another striking image, a close-up of Malinda Derouen's Billie Holiday with a single tear tracing a path down her cheek, speaks volumes about the emotional intensity of the character, a powerful visual hook for any promotional material. The iconic shot of Malinda by the vintage microphone further cemented her portrayal, a classic image ready for any poster or program.

Beyond the stage-set environment, the Sunset Center itself offered a magnificent backdrop that subtly communicated the prestige and experience awaiting the audience. To provide a grander, cinematic context for the New Canon Theatre marketing efforts, I deployed my DJI drone. The aerial capabilities allowed me to capture sweeping external views of the Sunset Center in its picturesque Carmel setting. These weren't merely establishing shots for a live recording; they were carefully planned visual elements intended for advertising, demonstrating the beautiful venue where this powerful story would unfold. A truly unique piece of marketing collateral was the overhead drone shot of Malinda Derouen and John Wineglass in a classic Porsche convertible, providing a stylish and evocative nod to the era and adding a distinctive, memorable touch to the promotional campaign. These drone visuals provided a unique, grand scale that complemented the intimate character photography, creating a comprehensive marketing package.

The success of New Canon Theaters "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill" was not just a testament to the powerful story, but to the vision of Director Lisa Gaye Dixon and the remarkable talent of the cast. My collaboration with the production team allowed me to photograph actor/singer Malinda Derouen as the iconic Billie Holiday, capturing her profound transformation and the very essence of Holiday's complex character for all promotional materials. Alongside her, I also had the privilege of photographing Grammy Award-winning John Wineglass as Jimmy Powers, conveying the quiet strength and musical backbone he brought to the production. These creative sessions focused on iconic poses, emotional expressions, and interactions that would become the visual hooks for the play's promotion, from posters and flyers to social media campaigns and press releases. The goal was to provide striking images that would instantly convey the mood and gravitas of the production.

From the vibrant costumes and evocative lighting to the compelling performances captured in their marketing-ready forms, every element contributed to the play's eventual triumph. My photography aimed to provide the visual foundation for this success, crafting images that would serve as powerful promotional tools. The combination of the high-fidelity GFX 100s for detailed character and set photography, exemplified by the intimate smoke, tear, and mic shots, and the dynamic capabilities of the DJI drone for establishing the elegant Sunset Center venue and executing unique concepts like the Porsche shot, allowed us to create a comprehensive visual story that perfectly supported the marketing and ultimately, the huge success of "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill" in Carmel.
